  43. I have a friend that is taking a extended backpacking/kyaking trip to the Northern
  44. part of Alaska.  He was told that he needed a handheld Aircraft band
  45. receiver.  Does anyone make a handheld that would operate on the aircraft
  46. band as well as the marine or one of the ham bands?  Can a modifcation
  47. be made on a radio to make this happen?  Who makes sturdy aircraft/marine
  48. radios?  Does anyone have one they want to sell for a good price?
  49. Does anyone have a list of frequencies that it would be advantageous to
  50. be able to transmit/receive on for the Brooks Range and Artic Ocean area?

  63.         In April, I purchased a Standard C558A from HRO.  Last week, I 
  64.         saw an HRO ad, expiring July 15, offering a free speaker/mic 
  65.         from Standard with proof of purchase of the C558A.  I called 
  66.         Standard to ask how long the bonus had been in effect and was 
  67.         told April 15 to July 15, but that they would probably act 
  68.         favorably on a request with an early April purchase date.  It turns 
  69.         out I bought mine on the 16-th, so there's no problem.  I'm a 
  70.         little disappointed that HRO didn't let me know of the bonus.  
  71.         While they could have been unaware of it on the 16-th, they 
  72.         have my purchase in their computer and could have done a quick 
  73.         search when they were notified of the bonus to catch me and 
  74.         others like me.

  76.         There are similar bonuses on other Standard HT purchases, See 
  77.         the HRO ad in the June QST or the Standard ad in the May QST.

  138. ICOM was having a coupon sale then.  In April and May, the street price went
  139. back up to $500.  (HRO was asking $499.  I know because I was looking in April.
  140. I got a Standard C558A, instead.)  I called around yesterday and discovered
  141. that ICOM is couponing this month so the price is lower again and the unit
  142. is readily available at a reduced price.  I'll bet the people who bought
  143. them in April and May are going to be plenty upset, though!

  145. You're right in your implication that it's not necessary to go to a Tour
  146. America stop to get the lesser price and the news of the coupons probably
  147. wasn't worth posting.

  149. This *does* raise an issue worth discussing, if only there were something we
  150. could do about it--namely, the way many manufacturers jerk their prices around
  151. to make it difficult for the newcomer to the hobby to figure out what's going
  152. on.

  240. Its a nice little SSB rig. I've had one around for 10 years or so with
  241. no problems. I don't care much for it on CW though. Too many signals leak
  242. around the CW filter causing high pitch birdies. For this reason I find
  243. it difficult to use on CW without an audio filter. Perhaps they improved
  244. this on later models.

  262. That was in '88 I think.  This rig was VERY clean, like new, low hours, 
  263. orig boxes, etc. (and i knew the guy).  I cant  say enuf good stuff about 
  264. this rig.  Last year I made a HUGE improvement: put a Heil element in the 
  265. desk mic.  This year got the Heil headset-mic combo.  Don't know current 
  266. price for clean used rig but don't buy the solid-state p/s (it's noisy).
  267. I would guess current price about $600-700.(with or w/o p/s). Check the 
  268. Yellow Sheets....always lots of good stuff.

  284. I'm looking for a smallish 2m/440 mobile radio for use on a temporary basis in
  285. my car.  Basically, I want to use it as a very transient system -- cigarette
  286. lighter power, ground clip to chassis, mag mount antenna on the roof, unit
  287. Velcro(tm)ed to my car's carpet.
  288.  
  289. Possible units:
  290.  
  291.     * Yaesu 5100.  My current leading frontrunner, as I want dual in-band
  292.       capability and don't need a detachable faceplate since the whole unit
  293.       will always be coming with me.
  294.  
  295.     * Kenwood 732/733.  The 733 is newer and is price-comparable to the 5100,
  296.       but AES has a nice price on the discontinued 732.  The Kenwoods lack a
  297.       backlit DTMF mic, though (it seems like it would be a nice touch at
  298.       night.)
  299.  
  300. Usage will be for commuting and SKYWARN.
  301.  
  302. Basic questions on these (or other recommended units):
  303.  
  304.     * Do they have built-in speakers of any type, or do I need to add an
  305.       external speaker to the list?

  307.     * Do most newer units have built-in and/or defeatable antenna multiplexers

  331. The Opto board in the MFJ analyzers is the frequency counter, and is as
  332. stable as any of the non-ovened counters.  The oscillator, on the other 
  333. hand wanders all over the place.  I cleaned mine up a bit by resoldering
  334. most of the joints (touch the iron to a joint and watch the rosin boil out...),
  335. clipping excess component leads, and soldering the variable cap to the
  336. board.  More of MFJ living up to their Mighty Fine Junk name.  It still
  337. drifts a bit, and the cap leaves much to be desired, especially on the vhf
  338. setting.   It still is a useful tool, as long as you keep an eye on the 
  339. frequency.

  341. I also added a resistor and diode across the power switch so I can charge
  342. the nicads in mine without unscrewing the case...

  358. Hi!  I am trying to help an American ham radio operator in Africa get
  359. his Kenwood TS-140 radio set up on packet radio with a KAM Plus.  His
  360. brother and I are sending the TNC to him, but we don't know what kind of
  361. connectors the TS-140 uses.  More specifically, does the TS-140 use the
  362. older 4 pin mic connector or does it use the newer 8 pins connector?
  363. Also is there an accessories socket on the back that could be used to
  364. supply 12 volts DC to the TNC?  If so, does anyone of you know what kind
  365. of plug is needed and which pins are used for +12 volts and ground, so
  366. we can purchase the connector and prewire it before sending it to
  367. Africa.  The radio is literally in the bush with a generator being used
  368. 2 or 3 hours in the evenings.  It is difficult to set up a solder
  369. station, so we are trying to make everything "plug and play" when we
  370. send it.

  410. The Yaesu FT530 was the first radio I ever owned....picked it up the day I got
  411. my callsign...just over a year ago now.

  413. It has its problems.  The first was the antenna, which Yaesu sent to me free
  414. right after they got the warranty card.  The second is some minor firmware bug,
  415. they offered to swap the radio at no charge (except to ship it to them)...but
  416. I didn't feel that the problem was serious enough to give up my radio for a
  417. few days.

  419. The radio has been running solid as my main packet radio (on my Packet BBS) for
  420. the last several months....it does get a bit warm.....I could use a little be
  421. more umpf to get in more solidly with the node.

  423. I'm thinking of getting another radio soon, and it'll probably be another one
  424. of these radios......I haven't quite decided if it has to be a dual band HT or
  425. not.

  427. The only activity on 440 is linking, and people crossbanding so they can get
  428. to the repeater from poor locations....but our new local area repeater should
  429. solve that problem.  If having a HT at 0.5W can talk to a person at the other
  430. end of town to a person with an HT in his basement at 0.2W....it'll do even
  431. better with 20W, though there is some question about its receive sensitivity.
